At 5:00am on Sunday morning, the bomb sirens sounded in Abu Gosh, Airport City, Beit Shemesh, Kfar Chabad, Mini Israel, Modiin, Modiin Illit, Ramla, Rishon LeTzion, Ein Geddi, and other areas of Central Israel and the greater Jerusalem area.
The IDF subsequently updated that “a missile launched from Yemen was intercepted by the IAF.” It added that sirens were sounded in accordance with protocol, Arutz Sheva reported. According to the report, Magen David Adom said that at this stage, no calls have been received at it its emergency dispatch center.
The Houthis later took responsibility for the attack, claiming to have targeted “several sensitive targets” in the Jerusalem area using a ballistic missile with a cluster bomb warhead, the Times of Israel reported. According to the report, the Iran-backed Houthis have fired several missiles with cluster bomb warheads at Israel in recent weeks. The sub-munitions deployed by such missiles do not have their own propulsion or guidance and simply fall to the ground, where they are designed to explode on impact, the Times of Israel added.
The Times of Israel noted that the Houthis stated that they are “examining developments in Gaza” regarding US President Donald Trump’s push to end the war. According to the report, the Houthis plan to continue to attack Israel until the war stops and the siege on Gaza is lifted.
The Houthis — whose slogan calls for “Death to America, Death to Israel, [and] a Curse on the Jews” — began attacking Israel and maritime traffic in the Red Sea in November 2023, a month after the October 7 Hamas massacre, the Times of Israel reported.
Since then, the group has fired over 130 missiles and more than 150 explosive-laden drones at Israel, causing death, injury, damage, and regularly sending hundreds of thousands of Israelis scrambling to shelters at all hours of the day or night, the Times of Israel emphasized. According to the report, Israel has repeatedly bombed Houthi targets in response.
Last Monday night, a missile launched at Israel from Yemen was intercepted, triggering rocket sirens in central Israel, Judea and Samaria, Haaretz reported. A few days before, Israel carried out airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, Haaretz added. The IDF said fighter jets struck the Houthis’ general staff command headquarters, their military media office, weapons depots, drone stockpiles, and multiple training camps, Haaretz stressed.
Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz described the operation on X as part of “Operation Moving Package”, writing: “We have now delivered a powerful strike on numerous terrorist targets of the Houthi terror organization in [Sanaa] as part of Operation Moving Package. Air Force jets struck several military camps, including the Houthi general staff headquarters, eliminated dozens of Houthi terrorists, and destroyed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and weapons depots. As I promised yesterday – whoever harms us will be harmed sevenfold.”
