A 25-year-old police officer was moderately wounded in a stabbing attack at the Chain Gate in Jerusalem’s Old City on Friday evening, as Jews across the world celebrate Shabbat, Arutz Sheva reported. According to an initial investigation, the terrorist exited a mosque after evening prayers, drew a knife, and stabbed the police officer in the back, Arutz Sheva noted.
The incident occurred at around 9:12 p.m., according to Magen David Adom, Yedioth Achronot reported. According to the report, paramedics provided medical treatment to the wounded officer, a 25-year-old man, before evacuating him to Shaare Zedek Medical Center in moderate condition and fully conscious.
The stabbing suspect, a resident of East Jerusalem, was shot dead by police at the scene, Haaretz reported. According to the report, the assailant pulled out a knife and stabbed the officer during a search. Palestinian media outlets reported that security forces subsequently closed the gate, which leads from the Muslim quarter to the plaza of the Temple Mount/Al-Aqsa Mosque.
MDA paramedic Itai Orion told Yedioth Achronot: “The police officer injured in the attack near the Chain Gate was treated at the scene and transported using MDA’s special ATV that operates in the Old City to the Western Wall plaza, fully conscious.”
Orion continued: “We then transferred him to a mobile intensive care unit and evacuated him to the hospital while continuing medical treatment, which included stopping the bleeding, bandaging, and administering medication. He was in moderate condition and suffering from upper body injuries.”
This comes after earlier in the week, another recent terror attack took the life of Tzeela Gez, a 30-year-old mother of three, on Wednesday night in a shooting attack on Route 446 in the Binyamin region while en route to the hospital to give birth to her fourth child, the Jerusalem Post reported.
After conducting an emergency Caesarean section to save her unborn child, hospital officials reported a slight improvement in the baby’s condition as of Friday morning, the Jerusalem Post added. However, they stated that the baby’s condition is still serious but stable, the Jerusalem Post noted. The baby is in intensive care, the hospital says, the Times of Israel reported.
Meital Ben Yosef, head of the Bruchin settlement’s local council, told Army Radio that Tzeela Gez, 30, a resident of the community who was killed in a shooting attack, was “all mother. A mother in her essence. A couple of parents were driving to the happiest moment that a parent can experience and the wife is killed on the way. It’s a horrific incident.”
Tal Shahar Carmon, a close friend of Tzeela Gez, told the Kan public broadcaster about the “unbearably difficult” moment when her husband Hananel explained to his three other children what had happened. “He told them that with Mom they traveled to bring the new baby, and on the way a terrorist shot at Mom, and Dad tried to save her, and they did everything, and they managed to save the baby but not Mom,” she recalled.
Gez, who was active on social media, worked as a trauma, anxiety, and relationships therapist, the Times of Israel noted. In the past, she posted videos and messages encouraging her followers to maintain their spirits despite the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip, the Times of Israel added.
“Another moment I am grateful that I am breathing, that I am present and that I am here,” she wrote on Facebook in December 2023, two months after the devastating Hamas-led invasion of southern Israel, which caused the war. “From here, all I want to do is be active and spread light; even a small smile is spreading light.”
