The Philippines Embassy in Israel announced that Leah Mosquera, a 49-year-old Filipina caregiver from Negros Occidental, passed away on Sunday due to severe injuries she sustained when an Iranian missile truck her home in Rehovot on June 15th, Arutz Sheva reported. According to the report, dozens of others were injured as a result of the strike, which left extensive damage to buildings in the area.
Mosquera was rushed to Shamir Medical Center, where she underwent multiple surgeries and fought for her life at the Intensive Care Unit for several weeks, Arutz sheva noted. During this time, she was cared for by her sister Joy, who also works in Israel, Arutz Sheva added. According to the report, Joy shared the sad news of her sister’s passing.
“The Embassy expresses its deepest gratitude to her and extends heartfelt condolences to the entire Mosquera family in the Philippines. The Embassy also thanks the first responders who rescued Ms. Mosquera, her doctors and nurses for their dedicated care, the priests who visited and prayed over her, and the Filipino community members who offered comfort and support to her sister and friends during this difficult time,” the Philippines Embassy wrote in a statement.
The Embassy noted that it is working on the repatriation arrangements and the provision of all necessary assistance for Ms. Mosquera. “Lovingly called Ate Leah by her friends, she would have celebrated her 50th birthday on July 29. Throughout her many years working in Israel, she dedicated herself to supporting her family back home — an enduring symbol of the courage and sacrifice of overseas Filipino workers around the world,” the Philippines Embassy added.
According to I24 News, Mosquera is the 30th fatality in Israel after Iran launched ballistic missiles and drones at Israel, responding to strikes against the regime’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs that saw hundreds of top commander eliminated. The Times of Israel reported that Iran fired approximately 550 ballistic missiles and around 1,000 drones at Israel. Most of the missiles were intercepted, but at least three dozen ballistic missiles hit populated areas, destroying apartment buildings and leaving over 13,000 Israelis displaced, the Times of Israel reported.
It should be stressed that the Iranian missiles did not differentiate between Jews, Muslims and Christians, nor did they differentiate between non-Israelis and Israelis. Haaretz reported that Iranian missiles hit the homes of about 40 foreign nursing workers, most of them from the Philippines and some from India, according to the Hotline for Refugees and Migrants. According to the report, human rights organizations in Israel have assisted dozens of immigrants, foreign citizens and asylum seekers, whose homes were damaged during the war. In Bat Yam, five members of a family from Ukraine were killed, and a child and a woman seeking asylum from Sudan were injured, Haaretz reported.
In addition, the homes of three families of Congolese origin, two families of Nigerian origin, and a family of Filipino origin were damaged, Haaretz added. In Bnei Brak, the homes of at least four families of Eritrean asylum seekers, along with a couple from Ivory Coast, were damaged, Haaretz stressed. According to the Hotline for Refugees and Immigrants, during the war with Iran, a Filipina nursing worker was wounded in a missile strike in Rishon Letzion. In Bat Yam, a long-time Nigerian immigrant was wounded, Haaretz added.
