Just as Israeli children left school and were supposed to go to their extracurricular activities, the Houthis fired two ballistic missiles at the Jewish state. The bomb sirens were sounded on Thursday March 28, 2025 at 1:00pm in Modiin, Latrun, Rosh HaAyin, Ramla, Or Yehuda, Tel Aviv, Bnei Brak, Jerusalem, Efrat, Hashmonaim, Gush Etzion, Kfar Chabad, Bet Shemesh, Beitar Illit, Lod, Kfar Kassem, Ramat Gan, Rehovot, Rishon LeTzion, Petach Tikva, Hevron, Kiryat Gat and a variety of other places in Judea and Samaria, as well as the Tel Aviv and Jerusalem area.
An IDF spokesperson told Arutz Sheva that the sirens “sounded in several areas in Israel following two ballistic missiles which were launched from Yemen. The details are under review.” Shortly afterwards, the IDF said, “Following the sirens that sounded a short while ago in several areas in Israel, two missiles launched from Yemen were intercepted prior to crossing into Israeli territory. Sirens were sounded in accordance with protocol.” According to the report, it later became clear that Israel had, for the first time, carried out a double interception using the Arrow 3 missile defense system.
Magen David Adom reported that medical teams were deployed to sweep multiple locations in central Israel where interception debris reportedly struck, Israel Hayom reported. Arutz Sheva reported that shrapnel fell near the town of Mevo Horon, and that a large fragment fell in the Gezer Regional Council. According to the report, Arab reports said that shrapnel also fell near ad-Dhahiriya, south of Hebron. Several calls were made regarding anxiety victims shaken by the blaring sirens, as millions rushed to bomb shelters, Israel Hayom noted.
The Houthis quickly claimed responsibility for launching the two missiles, saying that one targeted Ben Gurion Airport and another aimed at a “military target” in Jaffa, central Israel, the Times of Israel reported. According to the report, Italy’s ITA Airways said it had to divert one of its flights because of the missiles and that the flight later landed in Tel Aviv safely. The Times of Israel reported that Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree stated that “this is only the beginning” of their attacks against Israel.
The Jerusalem Post reported that this is the second Houthi attack in a week designed to terrorize Israelis, the first was on last Sunday March 23, 2025 at 7:20 a.m., which was timed to coincide with parents dropping off their children at school. The Houthis wish to demonstrate to Israel that they can fire at any time and place of their choosing, forcing millions of Israelis to rush to bomb shelters, despite the intense US attacks against the Houthis in recent days.
Seth Frantzman, a senior analyst for the Jerusalem Post, wrote in his recent column: “The Houthis appear to be keeping their missiles in underground bunkers, and these areas are hard to find and strike. Ballistic missiles can be disguised in the back of flatbed trucks and carried inside of a type of shipping container, for instance, as showcased by the Iranians in the past. It is likely this kind of disguise may have made it to Yemen. In addition, it is notoriously hard to find rocket launchers. During the Gulf War in 1991, the US tried to stop Scud missile attacks against Israel that were launched by Saddam Hussein’s regime from Anbar Province in western Iraq. The “great Scud hunt” did not go well, and it showed how even modern militaries have a hard time finding the proverbial Scud needle in the haystack of a desert.”
Frantzman concluded, “Yemen is full of mountainous terrain that rises more than 2,000 meters above sea level. It has mountain crags and steep roads, all of which make it hard to find missiles that might be rolled out of cave complexes or underground missile bunkers. The Iranians have perfected the creation of so-called underground “missile cities.” In fact, Iran showcased a new “missile city” this week. Clearly, this kind of bunker complex is what Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps advised the Houthis to build. The Houthis built these bunkers after 2015 when Saudi Arabia was intervening in Yemen and bombing them. They have 10 years of experience hiding missiles from modern US-made warplanes.”
